Arc Flash Study in Hanford

Food processing, federal installations, and healthcare across Kings County. We hold federal contracts as prime, and we are forty minutes up the road.

Kings County's industrial base is food processing and federal. Dairy and cheese production, tomato and vegetable processing, garlic and onion dehydration, meat processing, flour and feed milling, and precast and steel fabrication — alongside a major naval air installation, a regional hospital, and the county's municipal facilities.

Federal facilities

Federal work runs on different rules than commercial work, and most electrical firms do not regularly deal with them: registration and representations, contract-specific submittal requirements, escort and access procedures, background requirements, and schedule discipline that does not bend when a plant would rather you came back next month.

Phase Engineering currently holds a federal contract as prime for an arc flash study at a USDA research facility, sealed by a California licensed Professional Engineer. For work on federal property, state of licensure is generally not the constraint that it is on private projects, which is why our federal work is not limited to California.

Our engineers' background includes arc flash and electrical safety work at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, and multi-site programs across public agency portfolios. The full project list is here.

Plants that changed hands or expanded

Kings County has seen unusual turnover in its processing facilities — plants sold, repurposed, expanded, or brought back under new ownership. Every one of those events matters electrically.

New ownership inherits whatever documentation the previous operator kept, which is often incomplete and occasionally wrong. A repurposed plant runs different loads than the system was modeled for. An expansion or a service upgrade changes available fault current across the site. And a facility built in phases over several years ends up with sections modeled at different times under different assumptions, which is how a coordination study ends up internally inconsistent.

Specification Section 26 05 73

Where Division 26 05 73 is in the specifications, the coordination and arc flash studies are required before equipment is ordered. Sequencing them late is a common source of delay on new construction and phased expansion.

Facilities we work with in Kings County

Forty minutes from Visalia

Kings County is close enough that a site walk is a working day, not a trip. On phased projects — where a plant is built or expanded in stages over years — that proximity is what makes it practical to model each phase as it is energized instead of waiting until the end and reconstructing what happened.

What every study includes

Three things to check before you hire anyone

Ask whether a licensed P.E. Electrical Engineer seals the final report. Ask whether every panel appears in the coordination study time current curve plots, or only the main gear. And ask who performs the field data collection — missing conductor lengths and unrecorded breaker settings go straight into the incident energy result.

We send a P.E. Electrical Engineer to collect the data, with an electrician as support to open panel covers. The engineer who has to defend the model gathers its inputs.

Talk to the engineer who does the work

No sales team. You speak directly with a California licensed Professional Engineer about your equipment, your schedule, and what the study will actually cost.
